When I was 25 years old I embarked on my first solo trip to Mexico with a backpack and a Spanish/English dictionary. Since then, I’ve been travelling independently for over 25 years, to places like Guatemala, Jordan, India, Laos, Cuba, Ireland, Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay and China. I’ve taught English in Kerala, India; interviewed lesbian activists in Hong Kong; camped in the desert at Wadi Rum, Jordan. Most of my travels have been solo, and this has opened up many opportunities to make local friends. I’ve given workshops on how to travel solo as well as travel writing seminars.

Her writing has appeared in the Toronto Star, Canadian Geographic and Verge Magazine (which she edited for two years). Julia Steinecke is a recipient of the National Magazine Award and three Ontario Arts Council grants. She leads writing and travel workshops in Canada, the U.S. and Cuba.
